Monkeypox: What We Do and Don’t Know About the Recent Outbreaks
Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that is caused by infection with the same virus which causes smallpox. Monkeypox has a mortality rate of 3–10%. It was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of pox occurred in the lab monkeys kept for research. Thus, the name, ‘monkeypox.’ However, the first human case of monkeypox was registered in 1970. And since then, monkeypox has been reported in many people across several other central and western African countries. The sudden outbreak of monkeypox occurred again in May 2022 in several regions outside Africa. The current outbreak is different than the previous one. Because for the first time in the history, more than 1000 cases in 29 endemic countries were reported by WHO (as of June 2022), issuing a warning against the spread of the zoonotic disease.
